Earth Day is a campaign to raise environmental awareness and spur the masses (and governments) into taking action that will conserve, preserve and repair the environment.  It is celebrated around the world, in 192 countries, on April 22, and is the largest civic observance on earth.

Earth Day 1

Brief history of Earth Day

April 22, 1970 – The first earth day is held across the USA, bringing environmental issues to the nation’s attention for the first time and calling for better care to be taken of the natural world.  It worked!  The modern environmental movement was born, the USA EPA was created, Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts were all passed (in the USA).

April 22, 1990 – Earth Day goes global and is celebrated, in 141 countries, by over 200 million people.  Recycling is pushed as the main theme, boosting global recycling efforts and pushing environmental concerns into the global spotlight.  Earth Day 1990 paved the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Brazil.

April 22, 2000 – Earth day is celebrated in a record 184 countries, calling for action on climate change and clean energy.  The people are mobilized using every means from the internet to talking drum chains in Africa.

April 22, 2010 – Over 40 million environmental service actions are pledged toward a 2012 goal of A Billion Acts of Green and an international, 1-million tree planting initiative is launched.  The earth day network triples its online base to over 900,000 community members.

Earth Day 3

April 22, 2011How can you participate?

-Pledge an act with “A Billion acts of green” – Commit to taking one step towards a greener lifestyle and publish your commitment online.

-Start your own Earth Day event – Be an instigator in your local mother group.  It doesn’t have to be over the top, a simple morning tea serving organic teas and cakes, and a discussion on what steps you could all take to be greener parents would be perfect.

-Attend a local event – Search for an event to join on the Earth Day Network’s website.
