A Billion Acts of Green is the Earth Day Network’s people powered campaign to generate one billion acts of environmental service and advocacy before the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. The idea of “A Billion Acts Of Green” is to inspire everyone, from individual people, to organisations, corporations and governments, into committing to reducing our global carbon footprint and supporting sustainability. It is a powerful message that if we really want long term environmental change, we are the solution, and our actions count.
The Earth Day Network has set up a website to record the green actions pledged and recently the hundredth million act of green was pledged. They have until June 4th 2012 to reach their goal.
What constitutes an act of green? Any action that supports sustainability or spreads the message of environmental care is a green act.
There are already some heartwarming pledges online such as children promising to recycle every can they see in the rubbish bin, even those they see at school. There are also some amazingly large acts of green recorded, such as the Moroccan government creating a National Charter for the Environment and Sustainable Development. This is the first of its kind in Africa and the Arab world.
Being a green parent you might like to make a pledge for a parental act of green. That is a pledge to commit to raise your family in some way environmentally sustainable, So here are some ideas you might like to pledge, or that may inspire you to pledge your own idea:
-Use cloth diapers on your baby.
-Clothe your baby in organic clothing.
-Teach your children how to plant a vegetable garden.
-Start a compost bin and turn all your families’ food scraps into natural fertilizer.
-Try natural remedies before turning to other medicines.
Along with pledging a parental act of green you might like to consider making a pledge as a family. The campaign is also a meaningful opportunity to educate your children about how even their small actions effect the environment and you could help them choose their own act of green.

We must have done something right to have raised such a “green” son.
Reading some of the pledges, I am surprised at how many we already do; but I can’t rest on my laurels. This is about changing your habits ( which takes consistent effort) to do something more to make a difference. There is always room for improvement.
